How many days does it take to form a habit? Well, the internet (google) has varying opinions from 21 days to 30 days, 60 days and even 80 days. I have a feeling it's all relative and hugely depends on the individual and habit in question. 30 days ago I set myself a challenge to blog everyday, meditate everyday and complete one act of kindness everyday for a year. Somehow, I'm actually managing it and I'm 30 days in and gradually seeing a few habits forming. I'm very productive when I put my mind to something and possess a large amount of self control when I really try hard but consistency has been something I've lacked for, well, forever.
I realised I can be consistent when it came to eating very healthily and going to the gym purely because my health and wellness depended upon it. Could I bring this into other areas of my life? This is what the challenge is all about, and now that I'm thirty days in I know the chances of me giving up because I can't be bothered, I'm "too busy" or any other of the many excuses I could come up with are pretty slim. Then I'd have to start from zero again, I'd have to admit on here that I failed even though I had the power to excel and keep going.
What has this challenge taught me so far?
- That writing a blog post at midnight is not fun, get it done as early as possible because when you're tired you get frustrated with the laptop and WHY OH WHY CAN YOU NOT SEE THAT I'M TRYING TO SPELL STRAWBERRIES WHEN I WRITE STRARHHRYS SPELLCHECK COME ON YOU HAVE ONE JOB, ONE JOB!!!
- Priorities - sometimes you have to choose what's more important, get your priorities straight. Yep, it may at times mean not watching that episode of New Girl or enjoying another glass of wine during Friday night after work drinks when you haven't blogged that morning.
- Procrastination - do you really think sorting your underwear draw or the cupboard where you keep the saucepans it's absolutely paramount? No Peta, you're just avoiding actual things you need to do today.
- Not every idea will be amazing, not every photograph will be drop dead gorgeous but it's about trying and seeing how it goes. If it doesn't work out as well as you expected be proud that you tried and learn from it.
- Lists - everywhere and anywhere.
- Always keep a notebook at hand. As you blog everyday more ideas for posts and photographs come to mind, usually in the most unexpected circumstances where you can't just whip out your laptop and start scribbling. E.g whilst very athletically (ha!) swimming lengths of the gym's pool.
- Daily acts of kindness make you feel all warm and fuzzy inside.
- The headspace app is amazing and is brilliant at creating some much needed space and tranquility in my overly busy mind.
