A goodbye full of consequences...
It's Positive Friday, but it isn't just any old Friday today, in fact right now it doesn't feel positive at all. Today, on the 24th June 2016 the UK has voted to leave the European Union. As a Brit living abroad this does still affect me and those I love, the impact is yet to be seen and many friends have messaged today asking what I thought this meant for those of us living in Spain and our friends of non British nationality living in the UK.
Right now what I am most taken by is the sadness and grief that seems to have overridden social media over the course of today.
There seems to be a humbling bereavement, a goodbye full of consequences which will have ramifications for many generations to come. I have yet to see cheers of delight or whoops of celebration. I am, of course, very sure there are but the majority seem sorrowful.
The future is incredibly unknown not just for those living in the UK, British, European or of other Nationalities. It is uncharted territory for all countries within the European Union as well as the rest of the world.
For now, all we can do is wait. Whilst we twiddle our thumbs, lingering in the great unknown maybe we should take a moment to be grateful for what we have. An unimaginable amount of people in countries far worse off than the UK would give absolutely anything to be in our position. Let's stop the moaning, the shaming, the blame and the worrying and focus on the little things that make us happy today. We can't change the past, but we can appreciate what we have now and create the future we desire, be it living in the UK or elsewhere.
Like the huge gusts of wind that dries washing on a line, it will eventually calm, arriving at a quiet stillness, with ripples of a breeze here and there. The storm will pass and the chaos will die down. Meanwhile we can only hope that the decision made will be beneficial for all.
