Food Diary: On A Budget

I asked you lovely souls on Instagram  if you'd find a post on how I follow a free from diet whilst on a budget insteresting. I got an overwhelming response of "YESSSSS, I would!!!" So, here we are! I stuck to the budget completely, whilst I know there are a lot of repeat meals, I'm a big fan of batch cooking and having the same lunches/dinners during the course of a week.

Please keep in mind that I live alone and in Spain so it's quite possible you would need more or less money to buy the items below wherever you are. I am not a dietician or nutritionist. I am sharing this purely to inspire you to get creative in the kitchen, cook something different and show that eating healthy-ish on a budget is possible.

The Budget: €25 / £22 for the week. 

Food purchased from supermarket:

  • Brown rice
  • Honey
  • Rice milk x 2
  • Rice flour
  • Tea
  • Sleep tea
  • Tomato Purée
  • Tinned tomatoes
  • 2 x 6L bottles of water

Food purchased from local market:

  • Mushrooms x 6
  • Red pepper
  • Onions x 2
  • Melon
  • Apples x 5
  • Potatoes x 6
  • Tomatoes x 6
  • Carrots x 7

    Food used that I already had:
  • Frozen peppers
  • Almonds from the garden
  • Eggs

Day 1

Breakfast: Rice pudding with apple & sultanas. 

Lunch: Homemade Crisp Salad.

Snacks: Ice cold Melon, hot chocolate

Dinner: Homemade Gluten Free Pizza


Day 2.

Breakfast: Rice pudding with apple & Sultanas. 

Lunch: Spanish Omelette with a salad of lettuce, tomato and red pepper.

Snacks: Melon

Dinner: Cold Summer Stew with brown rice.


Day 3.

Breakfast: Smoothie - 1/4 cup of melon, 1/2 an apple and 1 cup of rice milk blended together. Was very sweet... maybe soya milk would be better option? 

Lunch: Spanish Omelette with the same salad as yesterday. 

Snacks: Dairy Free Hot Chocolate

Dinner: Plain boiled rice and half an apple - I had a bad stomach.

Day 4.

Breakfast: Boiled rice with half an apple - still had a bad tummy!

Lunch: Mushroom & Pepper Stuffed Baked Potato with a simple salad. 

Snacks: A small bowl of melon.

Dinner: The rest of the left over Spanish Omelette.


Day 5.

Breakfast: Chocolate Almond Biscuits with a cup of tea

Lunch: Mushroom & Pepper Stuffed Baked Potato with salad.

Snacks: The last of the melon - oh melon how I shall miss you, you were delightful! 

Dinner: Cold Summer Stew with rice.

Day 6.

Breakfast: Chocolate Almond Biscuits with a cup of tea. 

Lunch: Those scrum-didli-umptious stuffed jacket potatoes again just on their own. 

Snacks: Free From Hot chocolate. 

Dinner: I went to my parents' house for dinner.

Day 7. 

Breakfast: Apple & rice milk smoothie

Lunch: Cold Summer Stew on it's own. 

Snacks: An apple

Dinner: The last of the mushroom & pepper stuffed baked potatoes

I didn't find myself feeling deprived or hungry during the week, sticking to a budget has given me a feeling of control over my money whilst still knowing that I have eaten food filled with goodness which nourishes by body and fills my soul.
