Rainy Days

Rainy Days

It's been typical chilly grey British weather today, with the kind of cold that slowly ebbs it's way into your bones. Not the kind of weather you'd expect to be basking in on a late Spring day in Barcelona. Every person I have had the pleasure of speaking to on this less than fine day has moaned about the atrocious weather. (In Spain atrocious weather is a cloudy grey sky with a few showers throughout the day whilst still in double figures on the old thermometre.)

I found myself quickly joining in, "Yes! What on earth is it doing with itself?!" Ultimately blaming global warming for the mid afternoon showers.

It's crazy how such a simple thing like the weather can have such an immense impact on our moods, thoughts and how our day pans out. Even though I live in a place that has over 300 sunny days a year, those few dreary days here and there can really bring me down.

"El clima imprime al carΓ‘cter" is a saying that many Spanish people mutter, particularly in conversations regarding Northern European countries. Directly translated it means the climate imposes upon the character.

I really thing they've knocked the nail on the head with this one, to impose upon someone is considered an unwelcome force, decision or ruling. None of us wish to feel this way when the weather takes a turn for the worse, in a way we feel like there is nothing we can do about it.

My character and personality is usually very bright, cheerful and at times overly positive as well as very chatty. However, when I travel back to the UK or we have a few days of rain here I find myself to be quieter, more reserved, a little grumpy and lethargic.

How can we change our grumpy state of mind when we are unable to change our location?

I don't know about you but I can't afford to just swan off to Paradise when it gets a little drizzly here, so what can we do about SAD? (Seasonal Affective Disorder)

One word - Visualisation.

When we close our eyes and visualise a place or situation we transport both our mind and body there. Our body can't tell the difference between reality and what we are creating in our minds. So next time you feel a little down give it a go! Sit quietly and close your eyes, conjure up an image or play out a situation in your mind and imagine the feelings you'd have if it were a reality. At first it may be tricky but keep trying, even when your distracted go back to that happy place again.

Remember, nothing lasts forever...so any kind of weather is fine.
